TOURNAMENT & PAST RESULTS
In 1931, golf professional Tommy Galloway organized a premier amateur tournament to be hosted at Hermitage. Member and local businessman Frederick S. Valentine donated a trophy for the event and The Valentine Invitational was born.
Over the years, the Valentine Invitational has become one of the most prestigious amateur events in the mid-Atlantic region. Past champions of the event include Virginia Golf Hall of Famers Vinny Giles (2), Keith Decker (4), David Partridge (5 Championship, 2 Senior), Richard Smith (1), Wynsol Spencer (1), and Wayne Jackson (3). Other notable champions include Richmond, VA golf legend Nelson Broach (5) and the Hermitage father-son pair of Mark Lawrence (3) and Mark Lawrence, Jr (2). The event has a longstanding tradition for attracting one of the most elite amateur golf fields in the region.
2023 (81st)
Mid-Am: Hermitage’s own Sam Beach posted a 54-hole score of 202 (-14) to win the regular division by two shots over Jack Montague.
Senior: Richmonder Steve Serrao ran away with the senior division with a score of 203 (-13), resulting in a 6 shot victory over Jon Hurst, the 2022 Senior division champion.
2024 (82nd)
Mid-Am: In an incredible back-and-forth duel over the final 9 holes, West Virginia's Christian Brand got up and down from 60 yards on the 54th hole to win the Mid-Am division by 1 shot over 2023 champion and Hermitage member Sam Beach. Brand finished at 198 (-18), with Beach at 199 (-17) and Indiana's Matt Vogt in 3rd at 207 (-9).
Senior: Scott Shingler, the 2019 Valentine champion, won his first Senior division title with a two shot victory of 2x Senior champion Jon Hurst. With his win, Shingler became only the third player in history to win both the regular and senior divisions (Nussey, Jr and Partridge).
2025 (83rd)
Mid-Am: John Hunter (Houston, TX) drained a clutch 30-foot par putt on the 54th hole to win the 83rd Valentine by one shot over Kyle Downey (2x New York State Mid-Am champion from Rochester, NY). Downey led throughout until a bogey on 17 in the final round gave Hunter a 1-shot lead playing the final hole. On 18, both missed the green; Downey saved par with a short putt, but Hunter rolled in his long par putt to seal the win, with a score of 204 (-12). Downey finished at 205 (-11), and 2017 champion Jordan Utley finished third at 206 (-10) after a strong back-nine rally.
Senior: Defending champ Scott Shingler saw his 6-shot lead shrink as Steve Serrao and Brian Quackenbush (Aiken, SC) surged. Serrao’s chances faded with a double on 15, but Quackenbush birdied 12, 14, 15, and 16 to tie Shingler at -11. An aggressive approach on 18 set up a 10-foot birdie putt, which Quackenbush converted to win with a final score of 204 (-12). Shingler and Serrao finished second and third at 205 (-11) and 206 (-10), respectively.
